White Beech, an interesting example of a multi species Eucalypt Plantation

Based on a Farm Forestry Field Day held in March 2001 by the Northern Rivers Regional Development Board, Northern Rivers Private Forestry and Australian Forest Growers

'WHITE BEECH'

White Beech is owned by Super Forests Plantations and its manager is James Wright. This property is currently in the process of being converted to plantation with 19 hectares of trees established in January this year. The size of the property is 74 hectares (183 acres) and the area which can be planted as a timber plantation is 48 hectares (119 acres) or 65%. Areas on the property that are not being planted include native forest regrowth, slips and drainage lines.

The aim of the property owners in establishing this plantation is to produce quality sawlogs from a range of native hardwoods. A range of species are being planted as the owners wish for a diversity of species in their plantation.

The majority of the trees planted to date are block plantings of individual species although a small section has been planted as mixed species. Two mixes where planted, fast and slow growing with the fast growing group planted around the outside of the slower growing group.

Plantation Establishment consisted of the site being ripped then sprayed, mounded then sprayed again then mounded. The site was ripped and mounded at 4m intervals with the trees planted 2m apart along the rows, a 4m ´ 2m spacing. The seed for the trees was purchased from Queensland Department of Primary Industries, Forestry Tree Seed Centre. This seed was grown at Minyon Forest Nursery at Whian Whian and was planted by RJ Hibbins Pty Limited.

The species planted are,
