TECHNICAL REPORT
GREENHOUSE ALLIES PROJECT
Measurement of carbon sequestration
in small non-industrial forest plantations. (continued)
1 Introduction
One of the aims of this Greenhouse Allies Project was to field trial the newly
developed Greenhouse Challenge Vegetation Sinks Workbook (the VSW) and thus
develop a capacity among the private commercial tree growers in northern New
South Wales to measure the sequestration of greenhouse gases by their plantations.
The work conducted in this project falls into several components:
(i) harvests of selected species and creation of allometric relationships;
(ii) estimation of wood density for conversion of volume to biomass;
(iii) in situ measurements of plantations and estimation of standing carbon;
(iv) identification of published allometric relationships suitable for prediction of
standing carbon; and
(v) assessment of soil carbon.
The methodologies adopted were established in a workshop in May 1999, and are
outlined in a previous report (Scope Report). The report presented here concentrates
on the results of the work. The project has relied upon the co-operation of several
‘Allies’ who have given their trees and properties to be measured. The major
features of these properties plus the work done at each are listed in Table 1.
