Farm Forestry Manual and Planner
Subtropical Farm Forestry Association, 2001
It is a time of changing fortunes on farms in Australia.
Economic and
environmental factors are forcing landholders towards a re-evaluation of
their farming practices and their farms' potential and problems. It is
in this context that farm forestry deserves serious consideration. Farm
forestry offers a real possibility of converting previously unproductive
land into an asset of social, economic and environmental value by the
production of timber and other forest byproducts, the enhancement of
other farm production and the rehabilitation of degraded land.
The Farm Forestry Manual and Planner has been developed by members of
the Subtropical Farm Forestry Association over a four year period with
extensive input and review by many sources at the technical and
'on-ground' level. It is designed to lead the prospective farm forester
through the many steps involved in planning and implementing a farm
forestry project in subtropical eastern Australia. The Manual provides
practical information on issues such as the status of farm forestry,
relevant legislation, establishment, maintenance, marketing and
taxation. The Planner Documents provide a format for recording all
phases of the project, which then makes a good basis for a formal
Business Plan.
References and contacts for sourcing additional information are to be
found at the end of each chapter and also on Pages 134 - 139, including
General References, Useful Further Reading, Periodicals and Internet
Addresses.
Landholders are advised at an early stage to talk to others involved in
farm forestry, neighbours and other landholders, nursery persons,
consultants, local groups and associations. At some stage a decision
has to be made as to whether to commit oneself to a farm forestry
project. Information provided in this Manual and the associated Planner
documents will assist the landholder to arrive at this decision and help
record and assist the implementation of such a project.
Each section has a number of coloured photographs to assist the reader
in visualising Farm Forestry project development. In addition to this
the Association has produced a pictorial Farm Forestry Album on CD ROM
available from the SFFA office. Contact Details
The price for the Manual is $55.00 which
includes GST, postage is $7.10.
