Southern Cross University
School of Forestry
and
Northern Rivers Private Forestry
Private forestry in the Northern
Rivers is very fortunate to have a School of Forestry at Southern
Cross University. Northern Rivers Private Forestry and Southern
Cross University are actively involved, collaborating on projects
that have important forestry and environmental outcomes.
Collaborations have included;
Landholders' Perceptions of Farm
Forestry in the Northern Rivers Region of
NSW.
This project was designed to assist the NRRPC in the formulation
of a
strategic plan to develop commercial timber plantations on private
lands in
the region. The Commonwealth Department of Primary Industries and
Energy
funded it under the Farm forestry Programme (the precursor to AFFA).
The Greenhouse Challenge Allies
Projects.
Project 1 was a programme aimed
at developing capacity to measure carbon absorption in vegetation
and soils.
These activities provided an insight into the practical issues involved
in
measuring carbon sequestration and involved twenty-five Northern
NSW
properties. Other partners were Australian Greenhouse Office, NorthPower
and the other two Northern NSW RPCs. Project 2 (is almost finished)
has the
same partnership except that the Mid-North Coast RPC is not involved
and it
included "The Sinks Summit" December 2001.
The commercial utilization of
camphor laurel. The "From pest to profit"
report was done by Centre for Coastal Management, SCU and NRRPC
was a member of the steering committee.
Occasional lectures by NRPF members.
The NRPF will continue to have
a close association with SCU particularly in
supporting the forestry course. NRPF sponsor an annual prize for
the top
student at graduation.
