An Introduction to Harvesting
Each harvesting operation will need to have its own Harvest Plan that incorporates well established forest practices
and a detailed map of the forest showing important features, to guide the logging contractor.
Harvesting will aim to
create an uneven aged stand structure where only the trees that have reached economic maturity are removed,
along with silviculture thinnings in a single operation. Some 50% of the forest canopy would be removed, creating
regeneration gaps for new regrowth and retaining intermediate sized vigorous trees to grow for later harvest.
The landowner has a special role in managing native forest on their land, and will need to develop new skills
and knowledge to successfully meet the challenge. A good knowledge of the current legislative requirements
is also essential.
